01The region

The Coastal Plains

Warm gulf air and heavy seasonal rainfall keep this stretch of the coastal plains lush. Native grasses along the Colorado's rich bottomland soil regenerate the breadbasket, well suited for cattle grazing. Come spring, wildflowers avail themselves throughout the fields, giving way by summer to golden bales beneath the live oaks.

La Grange

La Grange got its start as a crossroads — situated where the Colorado River met the La Bahía Road, an old buffalo trail. It became a trade center, a confluence of the lives and cultures of those who decided to stay. Home to some of the most diverse wildlife in Texas, its fertile land and a steady flow of trade earned it its role as county seat. La Grange is a town built on a reliance on Texas land, and has remained strong because of what it found there to sustain itself.
